Kang GURU Travels to Jakarta - June 2009

AFL Launch in Indonesia attended by Kangguru

A mid-morning flight took Kevin to Jakarta on June 19th. In Jakarta Kevin appeared on TVRI’s English News Program on that same day. On Saturday Kevin attended a very special Australian Football League (AFL) event at Buperta, Cibubur near Bogor sponsored by the Australia Indonesia Institute (AII) and the Jakarta Bintangs Football team making the sporting ties between Australia and Indonesia even stronger. Over the next few days Kevin spent time with Gene Sugandy working on a new Busy Letter format (20th Anniversary edition) and the cover for KGI’s 20th Anniversary edition of the magazine. Kevin also visited the ms Nieuw Jakarta training establishment in Cikarang for young Indonesians who want an international career working on Holland America cruise ships all over the world. On Tuesday, Kevin began a 2 day teacher workshop at the University of Jakarta. Sue joined Kevin to present these workshops to 110 English language teachers.

On Friday night Kevin was special guest on the English News program on TVRI to talk about KGI's 20th Anniversary in Indonesia. Many thanks to Ibu Magda at TVRI and also to the TVRI news presenter, Pak Dony. It is hoped that even more people will now know about KGI n all parts of Indonesia.

On Saturday Kevin attended an Australian Football League (AFL) event at Buperta, Cibirbur near Bogor sponsored by the Australia Indonesia Institute (AII) and the Jakarta Bintangs Football team making the sporting ties between Australia and Indonesia even stronger. it was the Australian Rules Football Junior Carnival in Jakarta. Eight junior Indonesian teams from various locations in Jakarta, including Bogor, Bintaro and Depok, competed in the one day carnival organised by the Jakarta Bintangs Australian Rules Football Club. The winning team won the inaugural Alan Taylor Cup. The Jakarta Bintangs will also conduct an Auskick training session on the day giving all interested boys and girls a chance to try Australian Rules Football.

AFL Indonesia

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Bill Farmer, Oceania Australian Football League (AFL) Development Manager Andrew Cadzow and former professional AFL player Craig Starcevich will attended the carnival. They officially launched AFL Indonesia.

“This Carnival commemorates the late Allan Taylor, a former Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, who loved sport and was a passionate advocate of strengthening people-to- people links between Australia and Indonesia” said Bill Farmer, who is also a Patron of the Jakarta Bintangs.

“We are looking forward to working with the Jakarta Bintangs to set up a fully fledged junior football league for the kids of Jakarta and further promote the game to other parts of Indonesia, starting with Bali and Balikpapan”,
said Andrew Cadzow.

It was interesting to find out from officials at Cibubur that the Jakarta Bintangs have visited hundreds of schools throughout Jakarta promoting Australian culture and sport and developing around 200 committed junior players over the past 18 months. Check out the June 2008 KGI magazine for more information about Chris Bandy and the work he and his team have down.

The ultimate aim of the program is to have an adult Indonesian AFL team ready to participate in the International AFL Cup in Melbourne in 2011.

As KGI has mentioned many times over the past years the AII is an Australian Government initiative, which has been promoting the development of people-to-people links between Australia and Indonesia for the past two decades. AYAD is an AusAID initiative to assist young Australians to promote sustainable development and skills exchange in the Asia Pacific region see June 2008 KGI magazine.

MS Nieuw Jakarta

On Monday Kevin visited ms Nieuw Jakarta, the training establishment for the Holland America Line in Indonesia. Many thousands of young Indonesians have, and are, working on cruise ships all around the world. MS Nieuw Jakarta is well known as the best training school in Indonesia for students who want a career at sea. They train specifically for the Holland America Line. The school is in Cikarang an hour outside of Jakarta.

Kevin met with Robert W Nichols, Academic Director of the training school. Robert took Kevin on a tour of the school. From the outside the building is quite impressive but on the inside it is even more impressive.

It was interesting to see the students hard at work as if they were really on board a cruise liner - there were even passenger cabins in which students trained. Their trainers at ms Nieuw Jakarta, including Robert Nichols, were dressed as they would be on ship - in full uniforms.

The school is also home to the students for the 5 - 6 weeks that they are in training. Facilities at the school really make sure that students also enjoy their time there. There is a modern gym, a music room and entertainment area plus a variety of sporting facitilties. Read more in the September 2009 KGI magazine.
