Kang GURU Travels to Ngawi - November 2009

Ngawi

Here’s a quick report on a very big trip to Ngawi with Kevin from Kang Guru Indonesia. Kevin was in Ngawi for two days and it was fantastic presenting a teacher workshop and meeting hundreds of students!

It all started badly with a 4 hour delay on Garuda. Instead of leaving at 15.15pm for Surabaya from Denpasar, it left at 19.40. Delays and technical difficulties are understandable but lack of information from the airline to passengers is not. When will Garuda realize that informing passengers of delays as early as they can is good for them? I checked in and was told that the flight was on time. Okay, great. Then 20 minutes AFTER departure time they tell passengers the flight is 4 hours late! Maybe I will try LION next time.

After an overnight stay in Surabaya I traveled by train to Madiun – a three hour trip and it was very pleasant too. Then the Organizing Committee, led by Pak Adli, from Ngawi picked me up for the one hour drive to Ngawi. All was going well until I was pleasantly surprised by over 400 students waiting for me at SMP 2 Ngawi. Fantastic! The students presented a very clever dance routine using the letter K A N G G U R U to music and singing – well done and thanks from everyone at KGI as it was a wonderful birthday wish for KGI’s 20th Anniversary in Indonesia.

The away to the next unscheduled meeting with a further 400 students. This time they asked terrific questions and presented some excellent performances icluding a violin solo by a very talented SD student. It was very wet with heavy rain and yet the students joined in with the fun and the excitement of the day.

On Saturday KGI presented a Teacher Workshop for 60 teachers from the Ngawi area. It was fun and everyone seemed to enjoy the activities mainly taken from KGI’s new ‘Listen and learn with KGI’ – SMP level. Although it took a while to get going, once they started there was no stoppin’ them – well done Ngawi teachers.

After the workshop I returned to Surabaya to a hotel for the night then flew home the next morning to enjoy what was left of the weekend. A good trip and it was FULL of surprises. Thanks Ngawi!
