Kang GURU Travels to Sempu, East Java - November 2008

ETD: 10.00 ETA: 14.00 (local time)
We left IALF Bali at just after ten in the morning for the 5 hour trip to Genteng. Genteng is about an hour out of Banyuwangi on the road to Jember. The trip to Gillimanuk was good with only light traffic and good weather conditions. Ayu sat up front with the driver while Darmika and I were happy to sit in the back. We reached the ferry terminal at around 13.15. The driver was so keen to get on the ferry that he ignored the signs and tried to go through the entry reserved for trucks. A policeman waved us through to the proper entry lane for cars. He then checked the car registration and STNK and that’s where the trouble began.

The STNK for the car was a photocopy so that meant it wasn’t valid and certainly not valid enough for a inter-island ferry trip to Java. After sitting there for 10 minutes we were instructed to follow the policeman back to the local police station. We did that and while the driver tried to negotiate his way with the policeman in the police station, we patiently sat in the car. After 15 minutes or so the driver returned to the car minus some cash of course, and told us that we needed to transfer to another car belonging to his boss which as on its way from nearby Negara.

The driver left the police station and drove at a furious rate back towards Negara which is on the road back to Denpasar. The driver was sort of slowing down and checking out any silver colored cars that were coming from that direction in case one of them was our replacement vehicle. I suggested we pull over and just wait for the car to arrive so we did that. We were facing east and a narrow edge of the road so it was suggested that we find a larger parking type area on the opposite side of the road to park in. In that way, when the replacement car arrived it could pull up beside us and we could easily transfer the luggage, etc, into that car.

We waited over an hour for that car to arrive from just 10 minutes down the road. It had left 10 minutes ago but somehow didn’t manage to didn’t arrive until almost 14.45. It finally arrived with apologies everywhere and we were on our way once again. This time we went straight onto the ferry, no police checks. The ferry was old but I made the crossing to Java in 30 minutes and once again we were on dry land. As were leaving the ferry we had to pay a parking fee. Would you believe that – a parking fee for ‘parking’ on the ferry even though we had board many tickets before even getting onto the ferry in Gillmanuk?

The driver raced off the ferry and, after paying another parking fee, we were on the road to Genteng. The driver apparently knew where we were going although Ayu and I weren’t so sure. Instead of turning left, the driver raced off to the right. It wasn’t until an hour or so later as we entered the Kabupaten of Situbondo that it was remarked that this couldn’t be the right road. As I had said before, Genteng is on the way to Jember. So Ayu called Dyah in Genteng and guess what? We turned around and headed for Banyuwangi, passed the ferry terminal and on the road to Genteng. On the way we still asked people for guidance but we finally made it to Genteng at 7.00pm – a full nine hours after we left Denpasar on this estimated 5 hour journey.

Our old friend, KGI Champion Suryadi from Madura was at the hotel when we arrived and with a friend of his from Jombang, Pag Gilang. Dyah was there too with a few members of the Get Together Organizing Committee. It was good to see all of them. Dyah took us to her favorite warung in Genteng for dinner then we all went to the nightclub at the hotel for some singing and just a little dancing. Gilang sang and danced as did Pak Tato from the committee. It was fun but all came to an end around 10pm.
The assembled club members in Genteng

The Sempu Get Together began at 9am sharp. The KGI group traveled out to SMK Al Azhar Sempu, about 20 minutes from Genteng. The school grounds featured a large tent fully decorated by the club members. Members from three Kang Guru Connection Clubs were there - Fragrant Water, Charming Learners and Galaxy. There were around 85 members gathered to celebrate the last Get Together activity for these clubs. All three clubs have been keen and enthusiastic for many years and although KGI will keep in contact with them and their members for the next year, the clubs will definitely continue on to provide valuable assistance to their communities.

The clubs, divided into groups, presented performances for the onlookers and for the KGI team. They ranged from song and dance performances, poems and cultural demonstrations. The KGI team judged the performances and rewarded the individual performances with KGI merchandise. The venue was well set up with a large sunshade cover (it was a bright and hot, sunny day), music system and even a live band. It was great to meet longtime Sempu friends too - Nur, Aziz, Jupriadi and Jarkoni. Many thanks too to the wonderful Principal of the school, Pak Asnan and his band of loyal teachers including Mbak Dyah and Pak Tato. This wonderful school is obviously very keen on English and KGI is sure much of that is due to Pak Asnan and Mbak Dyah’s interest in their students and the English language. He also told us that his school in offering a broadcasting course in the near future and that his school is the only school in the Banyuwangi area that has a real radio station on-site.

After a delicious lunch, the KGI team presented quizzes, a dance routine for students to learn plus an English language quiz related to the September 2008 KGI magazine. Everyone had lots of fun and we are sure the members will remember the GTG for along time. I know we will.

Hello, Mr. Kevin….How do you do ? I hope you always fine. I am Astri Novitasari from Charming Learners Club. I want told you about Final Club Gets Together. This is my story….

Yesterday at 15th November 2008, I feel very happy. Because I can met again with Mr. Kevin, Ms. Ayu, Mr. Darmika and champions from Madura and Jombang. But, why Ms. Sue didn’t follow it ?????? If Ms. Sue followed it, the crue of Kangguru was complete.

We directed to accept arrival Kangguru. I am very very very very very happy when Ms. Ayu still remember me. Then, I and my friends take a picture with Ms. Ayu. We told many thing in Ms. Ayu. Because we must try to speak English well, although we didn’t speak English.

The agenda of Final Together started. All the members must out from area SMK Al-Azhar. We must walk with the group and make line up. In yard of SMK Al-Azhar, we must sing a song from Indonesia and Australia. It is Indonesia Raya from Indonesia and Advance Australia from Australia. My club sing a song loudly. Then we must performance each group. My group got last performance. We perform the traditional game of Banyuwangi. It is Kerupuk-kerupukan. I invite Ms. Ayu, Mr. Kevin, Mr. Darmika, Mr. Suryadi and Mr. Gilang to followed the traditional game. If we got defeated, we must got punish. The group of Aziz like Ms. Ayu, I and Mr. Gilang got punish. We must sing a song with title ‘From This Moment’. But not only the group of Aziz but also the group of Aliefia sing a song too. After all group perform one by one, Ms. Ayu and Mr. Kevin choose the winner. There are two winners. But my group didn’t got the winner. But it’s no problem.

I hope my voice enter in CD. Actually my group didn’t perform because the time is 11.30 p.m and they must take a rest. I, Oniek, Kholik and Aliefia searched the shop to buy water and went to mosque to pray. After that, we went back in SMK Al-Azhar. Ms. Anis called me, I don’t know why she call me ? It appears we got rice. We must stamp in one of the body. It’s like evidence if we got rice.

Now for a report received on Nov 20th from Dyah, the English language teacher and KGCC organizer at
SMK Al Azhar Sempu

Dear KGI Team,
How are you all KGI team? Especially Captain, Ms. Ayu n Darmika. I’m better now although the gypsum on my left arm will be open next 2 month, coz I got broken bone on my arm. I get holiday till this by Saturday and I will go to the office next week, God Willing. And of course for a while I will not ride my motorcycle, maybe my brother will drop me. I teach grade 12 so, I have to work hard so that they will be ready to face the National Exam.

Let me tell you about all the preparation of the event and also the event (15th November 2008). To tell the truth before that we had more than 150 members, but because we as teachers (Dewi, Tato and me) wanted divided into several groups, some of members got scare to present on the stage, that’s why we only had around 100 members. And I got really mad to Dewi and Tato coz they ordered the students to use Indonesian or mix between Indonesian and English for their performance. I told them and also students that they had to use English, only English. They said yes, coz I couldn’t accompany them to practice coz I had to handle to make “spanduk” or street banner affixed on both ends. Then the students practiced by themselves. Three of us (Dewi, Tato and me) were too busy making proposal and preparing all the things.
Friday, 14th November 2008 we made decoration for the tent n stage. We bought so many papers for decoration and also some balloons. In the afternoon, people set the tent. Almost all students decorated the tent till night. At 7.00 pm we went to AJM(Agung Jaya Mahkota) Hotel to pick KGI team n KGI Champion to have dinner at Warung Makan Jamilah. And we knew that Captain like Rawon, so he decided to choose it. We were enjoying our dinner while we were chatting about many things. And what made us surprised Kang Guru paid the dinner. Actually we wanted to pay that coz we invited KGI team. We felt so shy coz this thing. We are not to be able to give KGI team anything but we got much from KGI. After having dinner we went back to the hotel to come to the café and bar. And Tato started to sing 2 songs. Then we enjoyed the songs. At 8.30 we went back to the school. Tato and students made finishing to the tent while I made some id card for all members at home.

The big day was coming, we went to school early. Tato prepared the sound system and the things around it. Dewi made up the dancers. I arranged the students to do something n also gave the id cards. At 8.00am with my friend, I came to the hotel to pick KGI team up to our school. At 9.45 we went to the school. And we did our activity, starting with some parade from each groups then we sang Indonesian Anthem, Indonesia Raya and also Australian Anthem, Advance Australia Fair. Then Capt. Cut the ribbon as the symbol of the opening of this club activity. And he also flew the balloons. After that our headmaster gave a speech. We are really sorry coz we didn’t know what our headmaster thought before. We were really shock when our headmaster asked for financial for school. At that time three of us wanna kick our headmaster when he was speaking like that. Hope you all forgive what our headmaster spoke. The next speech was from Captain, and also Ayu.

The show was performed with yel-yel competition. Although I knew Ayu asked me to take this part later but Tato forced us to do that. After that activity actually we had game who am I and what am I but again Tato changed it, we presented crazy face by doing lips sing. At the beginning they practiced using English songs but I dunno exactly why they changed it. I’m so sorry. I knew those activities made KGI boring, especially Captain. But I dunno what to do. At the break time, while KGI team were having lunch Captain asked us about our next activity, actually we still had drama from each groups but because almost groups did mix between Indonesian and English for the conversation, so we decided to cancel it.

At 12.30 we did game which handled by KGI team and us. All students were so happy and sweat. We enjoyed the games very much. Especially when they got KGI goodies. All students wanna get t-shirt. Only few who got it. And the last part of the game was dancing who was conducted my Ayu. We were all dancing and laughing. We did enjoy it very much especially the goodies, heheheheh. After that we took pictures together then shake hand. We felt so sad that KGI team would leave us. I knew KGI team was really disappointed with our event. We are really sorry. We can’t give you the best things like what you want. And that was the best thing that we can give to KGI team. After we said goodbye and all the students went home, we cried and cried coz we made disappoint KGI team especially Mr. Kevin. Please forgive us, I hope KGI team are not hate us. We still need your support especially our students. They can improve their English by listening to KGI Show on our local radio, GA FM 102.8 every Monday morning at 6.30 till 7.30. and also reading KGI magazine and sometimes browsing in KGI website. Without KGI we are nothing.

We really appreciate for the coming of KGI team, Mr. Kevin R. Dalton, Ms. Ayu Kusumastuti, Mr. Darmika and also KGI Champion, Suryadi. We never dream that KGI team will come to our school, twice in this year. Many schools are so jealous to us. And some English Clubs are also jealous, too. You gave us much but we never satisfy you. I’m really sorry. To representative from all SMK Al – Azhar teachers n headmaster, also Dewi and Tato and all club members plz forgive our mistakes and thank you very much for all that you have done for us. Hope we will be friend and partner forever. Good neighbours make good friends. I love you all KGI team.

Thank you for KGI goodies (T-shirts) for me, Tato, Dewi and Headmaster. But we found all for men (t-shirt with round neck), if you don’t mind please give me and Dewi t-shirt with V-neck. I’m sorry if I ask to much to KGI.
